Death Tunnel

Death Tunnel is a 2005 horror movie filmed at the Waverly Hills Sanatorium. It stars Steffany Huckaby, Annie Burgstede, Kristin Novak, and Jason Lasater.

Plot

Five college girls who were attending an initiation party (themed "Truth or Scare") wake up inside an abandoned sanatorium. They are told (via a speaker system within the sanatorium) that they must spend five hours inside, each on a separate floor. The girls are warned that they must survive five ghosts during the night. Each girl finds newspaper clippings from the 1930s, and they learn that the sanatorium had previously been used during the so-called "White plague," and that thousands died from the disease - while many others killed themselves in the hospital. Although this starts off as prank, both the girls and the prankster find themselves in a fight to prevent history from repeating itself. They discover that there is only one way out of the sanatorium - the tunnel underneath the hospital, nicknamed the "Death Tunnel," as it was used to transport all of the bodies out of the hospital.

Reviews

The film has met with almost universally poor reviews for being too trippy with its visuals, too short on actual storyline, and lacking actual scares. For a time, it was rented heavily and was out of stock for rental at the Blockbuster nearest the actual location. Most local Louisvillians pan the movie for being a complete and perhaps distasteful film that disrespects Waverly and the history.^{[citation needed]}

Trivia

Sony Pictures released this film to theaters for a small period of time, but it is known for being a Direct to DVD release.

A FANGORIA magazine photographer provides a behind the scenes photo shoot of the film on the Special Features of the DVD.

The movie was inspired by actual stories of hauntings at the Waverly Sanitorium.^[1]

Sci-Fi recently broadcast a completely re-edited version of the movie, for censorship and also using full and partial deleted scenes and re-arranging scenes and sound effects.
